Incense Cedar Origin:
Incense cedar is found primarily in California, Oregon and western Nevada.
Incense Cedar Workability:
It works well with both hand and machine tools. It glues and nails well but blunt nails should be used so the wood doesn’t splinter. Incense Cedar planes and sands to a smooth finish and holds paint extremely well. Care in finishing should be taken as it sometimes will bleed sap even after being kiln-dried.
Uses:Since it is a very stable, durable and decay resistant wood, Incense Cedar is ideal for making siding, decks, fence posts, outdoor furniture, closet linings, and chests. Incense Cedar is also the number one species for making pencils.
Color:The sapwood is a creamy off-white and the heartwood is a light to medium brown with a red hue. The grain can often be unusually straight with a fine uniform texture.
Janka Hardness:470 (very soft) Similiar in hardness to Butternut.
Decay and Weather Resistance:The heartwood of Incense Cedar is aromatic and is very resistant to decay. It is sometimes used for fence posts on account of its good weathering characteristics.
