Selection of California Buckeye live edge burls, also known as Horse Chestnut

Origin of California Buckeye:

California buckeye wood originates from the California buckeye tree (*Aesculus californica*), native to the western United States, particularly California and southern Oregon. The name "buckeye" comes from the tree's nut, which resembles a deer's eye. Historically, the tree was used by Native Americans for crafting tools and utensils, as well as for medicinal purposes. Today, California buckeye is highly prized for its unique spalting, vibrant patterns, and burls, making it a favorite for decorative and artistic woodworking projects.

Our California Buckeye burl pieces are kiln-dried to prevent checking and warping, making them ideal for smaller projects such as custom furniture, accent pieces, and decorative items. These burls often feature beautiful swirling grain patterns, with stunning contrasts of blue/grey, black, and golden hues, creating a truly unique and rare look. Known for their striking appearance and distinct character, California Buckeye burls take stains and finishes well, offering versatility for a wide range of applications. With their durability, beauty, and one-of-a-kind aesthetic, these burls are perfect for crafting functional yet visually captivating pieces.

Color of Buckeye:

California buckeye wood is characterized by its light cream to pale yellow sapwood, which often features dramatic streaks of blue, black, and gray caused by spalting. The heartwood, when present, is typically darker with similarly irregular patterns. These vibrant contrasts and unique markings, especially in burls, make California buckeye visually distinct and highly sought after for decorative and artistic woodworking applications.

Janka Hardness:

350 lbf (1,557 N)

Decay and Weather Resistance:

California Buckeye wood is rated as non-durable in terms of decay resistance and is poorly resistant to insect attack. It is not suitable for outdoor or structural applications without proper treatment or sealing.
